Brand - Simon Massey, London designed by Janice Wainwright
In 1965, the London fashion house Simon Massey snapped up Wainwright straight out of the Royal College of Art, making her chief designer. She shook things up fast, introducing the women’s trouser suit bold and daring, and, to many at the time, scandalous!
By the late 60s she was making headlines. One newspaper reported that Wainwright tried to waltz into some of London’s swankiest hotels only to come up against dress codes that still barred women in trousers.
She was also part of an inner circle of designers trusted to work with Celia Birtwell’s iconic printed textiles - placing her right at the heart of the decade’s most vibrant creative scene.
Wainwright continued designing for Simon Massey until 1971.
